Pendleton's 49ers
I have sold a few of these in my day and knew the background (Pendleton’s first foray into womenswear with this jacket in 1949). Researching older
ads I was surprised to see it featured belted just as often as worn loose. It is usually called a "swagger" jacket.
Here are two ads from the early 1950’s and the text with one of them -
“Famous Pendleton 49er ... the classic swagger jacket which every woman wants .... wears ... wants more of. Styled with a convertible collar and can
be worn belted or free swinging. Made of sheer light weight spring woolens.”
 
Funny coincidence that Mary (vintagmerchant) posted elsewhere -
“last weekend saw a girl wearing a 49er buttoned closed with a wide leather belt ~ it was cute cute cute that way! “

I love those jackets!! I have sold a few myself but now I have two which I am keeping!!! Didn't I read that even though they were called 49er
jackets, they didn't really come out until the early 50s?

I think that may be right Linda. I know they were a favorite article of clothing in the 50's on college campuses.

That ad is from 1953.
I've been collecting Pendleton material because I'll be doing a blog post on the 49er very soon. I also have this:
You could buy the Pendleton yard goods and make your own. I have a great piece of it:
I'd better quit now or I'll have nothing new to put in my blog!

Yes! I love the belted 49er! I have a 49er style jacket up on eBay right now, but I couldn't get the belt in above the pockets...I think I am a
little taller than the woman it was designed for.
Looking forward to that Lizzie!

Lizzie (and Maggie) great blogs. I didn't realize the white label was for women ... so just went and read the VFG label resource carefully. So much
work in there. Interesting info from that source -
For many years, Pendleton raised their own sheep and spun and wove the wool. They sold the fabric as well as the blankets and finished clothing. At
one time, Pendleton used 1% of all the wool produced in the US.

I've been reading this thread with a lot of interest - I admit, before this, I had no idea about Pendleton  . So, something new learned again! Anyway, I've quite fallen in love with them too!
Now I certainly know what I could look out for when I'd need a nice new casual jacket. I have a bit of a jacket-fad anyway at the moment - but I only
bought a new winter jacket last year, which, coincidentally, is a plaid one too!
Denise, I love your photos - and that red and grey jacket, that is sooo gorgeous!

I had the cutest yellow and black 49 er with matching wrap skirt I found in KK's (atticville) shop. It was hard to let go of it!

"Swagger jacket"...I'd never heard that! I have found a handful since I posted that collection. This truly is Pendleton territory where I live.
I have one favorite post office counter clerk who, when she found out what I do (years ago now) described to me a jacket she once had in enough detail
that I knew she was talking about a 49er. She spoke of it so lovingly and wistfully that I found one I thought would suit her and brought it in one
day. She got tears in her eyes and put it on right away! These are truly beloved jackets.

Lynne, that award meant quite a bit to me then, as the terribly shy, self-conscious, awkward, unpopular kid who was horrific at everything in gym
class. You bet I kept it!
