STAVROPOULOS

(1920-1990) George Stavropoulos was born in Tripolis, Greece, in 1920 and studied design in Paris. In 1949, Stavropoulos opened a salon, Nikis B, in Athens. He initially became recognized for his custom-tailored suits and coats — although his most popular designs proved to be those based on the classic draped Greek silhouette.

In 1961, he emigrated to the United States and opened a wholesale and retail operation at a salon on 57th Street in New York. There, Stavropoulos became known for his evening wear that included details such as draping, tiering, asymmetrical folds, wrapped coats, kimono sleeves, floating panels, capes, and bias cuts — primarily made of colored silks and chiffons. By the mid-sixties, Stavropoulos's flowing chiffon evening gowns and coat and dress ensembles were popular and worn by celebrities such as Lady Bird Johnson, Elizabeth Taylor and Maria Callas. Stavropoulos’s designs were simple and clean — he did not use ornamentation or embroidery, preferring his clothing to stand on the simple beauty of their silhouette. He continued to remain true to this signature long and flowing bias cut silhouette throughout his career, producing collections until his death in 1990.
