MR MORT
Mr. Mort was founded in 1952 by Mortimer Goldman. The company produced midpriced but fashionable dresses. Stan Herman, who had worked at various firms in New York, became the designer at Mr. Mort in 1959. At Mr. Mort in the 1960s, Herman's designs were on the cutting edge of fashion - he was one of the first to show dresses over pants.
In the mid 1960s, the company was bought by Russ Togs, with the hopes of giving them a more fashionable image. Stan Herman then opened a design studio, where he produced not only his own label, but where he also did free-lance work. He designed dresses for department stores and lingerie for Van Raalte. He also did work uniforms for such diverse groups as United Airlines and McDonalds. In the late 90s, he took his at-home clothing line to TV retailer QVC, where his name again became a household word.
Mr. Mort closed sometime in the 1980s.
