VERA MAXWELL
Vera Maxwell was born in New York City in 1904. Maxwell's first foray into the fashion world was as a model. She studied tailoring in London and upon her return to New York worked as a designer for sportswear and coat firms. Vera Maxwell Originals opened in 1946, and she is considered one of the founders of the American "look" along with Cashin and McCardell. Maxwell received a Coty Special Award in 1951, and a Neiman-Marcus Award in 1955. In 1970 a retrospective of her work was held at the Smithsonian Institution. The business was still in operation in 1985.
Vera Maxwell is not the famous scarf designer. That is Vera Neuman. |
