MARSHALL FIELD

Marshall Field was a Chicago based department store, founded by Marshall Field, who bought out partner Levi Zeigler in 1881. His business became the largest department store in the US and later was expanded into a chain of stores.

Considered a social center as well as a shopping one, Marshall Field's was the premier store of the Midwest United States, with its emphasis on customer service, its catering to wealthy customers, the various lines of credit for wealthy ladies, and the acceptance of returned merchandise without question.

The first two store buildings were damaged by fire; however, the 1892 Marshall Field building still stands and is serving its original purpose.

Field died in 1907. His company continued on, and was bought by Target in 1990, retaining its name. In 2005, Marshall Field was sold to Federated Department Stores Inc., and early in 2006, began the process of changing the Marshall Field stores to Macy's.
