ISABEL TOLEDO
(b. 1961) Isabel Toledo studied fashion design at FIT and Parsons in New york. In 1984 she married artist Ruben Toledo, and a litle over a year later she made her first collection. It was well received, with coverage in Vogue, and the clothing was caried by up-scale stores. But her designs were judged to be too avant garde for American consumers, and due to disagreements with store buyers, for years sold only in the Japanese and French markets. Today Toledo takes her time with her collections, presenting them only when she feels thay are ready. In 2005, Isabel and Ruben jointly won the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Early in 2007, Toledo was named creative director of Anne Klein.
