IRENE SALTERN

(1911 - 2005) Irene Stern Salinger designed under the name Irene Saltern.  She  designed for the movies in the 1930s and  1940s.  In 1950 she becane head designer for California sportwear house Tabak, but left to design her own line.  She designed under her own name in 1955-57.  She returned to Tabak and stayed with them until 1965.  in the next twelve years she designed for a variety of companies, including Phil Rose and Lanz.

A cutting-edge designer, she is widely credited as a pioneer in the California sportswear/separates revolution in the 50s. She's noted for her nautical wear and for her big hardware-inspired chunky belts and Indian-inspired designs in the 60s & 70s.
