GLORIA SWANSON
Miss Swanson, the silent screen star, added clothing designer to her repertoire of professions, because - as she thought - all actors should have another string to their bow to pad out the lean times. Her label, Forever Young (a play on both her own indestructible looks and the desire of older women to look younger), was manufactured by the Puritan Dress Company between 1951 and 1981.
Swanson traveled to stores across the country, making personal appearances to promote her line and to narrate fashion shows featuring it. Even though she was past 50, she was known to go backstage during show intermissions to stand on her head!
