WILKINS, EMILY Print E-mail

EMILY WILKINS

(b. 1920) Emily Wilkins got her start in Hollywood, not designing for the movies, but designing for the children of stars. She would design the dress, taking into account the personality of the little girl, sew it herself, and make a sketch of the girl wearing the dress. In 1943, she started Young Originals to manufacture girl's clothing. She became most known as a teenage or junior designer, and her clothes were designed with the modern teen in mind. They often had ways of adjusting to a larger fit as the girl grew. Her clothing was often influenced by fashions of the past, and had a certain feminine edge.
